Chris' Trip
I thought I had better write a blog about Singapore and the first day in Vietnam.
Singapore is hot, sweaty and very smelly. Having said that it's also a pretty cool city with friendly people and some pretty cool stuff. We didn't actually do much in the four days we were there, except the expected shopping for Keren. The prices there were the same dollars as they would be in English pounds, but the exchange rate is about 3, so everything is very cheap. Keren, needless to say, took advantage of this!
The city is incredibly confusing and we got lost so much that we spent a lot of time just working out how to get to the malls. Whoops. It wasn't helped by the 34 C heat and crazy humidity. The one exciting thing for me was getting my University laptop there (a MacBook Pro), and saving around 250 pounds on it! That is what I'm typing on at the moment.
We missed our flight to Viet Nam, although luckily they didn't charge us to change it to the next day. We ended up staying a night in the Red light district which was very funny; Keren got the expected dirty looks from most of the guys there, and a hooker went to grab my arm but drew back with an 'oh f***' look when she saw Keren! Very funny!
Viet Nam has proved interesting so far. I knew what to expect, having been here before, and Keren has adapted very well to the hustle and bustle. We got a couple of guys with bikes with seats on to drive us to the Opera House, but instead they decided on taking us to the War Museum. Which was nice... After that we told them to take us back the way we came, but they didn't seem to understand this so they took us to a laquering workshop (and like the tourists we are, we did actually buy something. 1-0 to the commissioned riders). After this and a few stern, but polite, words, they drove us back to the hotel. Well, almost. About 1k away from the hotel he stopped and wanted paying so I said take me to an ATM. How much? 600,000 dong (around 20 pounds). What?! I told him that the ATM could only give me 500,000 and he seemed OK with this. We drove on, but a bit after that he pulled over again and wanted another 600,000 for him (apparently the first bit was only for the other guy pedaling); I basically told him where to shove it and he kindly let us walk the rest of the way home. N'est pas cool.
Our hotel is quite nice, with good staff and a cheap laundry service. We also get a free breakfast which is a continental with an egg. Not bad. More walking about the city today, and tomorrow we may go on a two day tour, but I will post on that if and when.
