It was a big day of touring today. We were up and about early for us……and hit the road to Dingle. The drive to Dingle was about an hour and the outlook was stunning - especially around Dingle Bay. It was well worth the drive there - as rushed as we were - to see the surrounding areas of Dingle. The trip to Dingle from Tralee is basically one way, so you return the same way you come in - unless you head further South and do the Ring of Kerry, however for us, time did not permit as we wanted to have our last night in Dublin.
From Tralee we drove back through Listowel and headed towards Limerick, passing through the Shannon estuary along the way. From Limerick, it was basically picking up the freeway and full steam ahead to Dublin. All up, we were probably driving for about 5 and a half hours, so I had a mean thirst up when we arrived back in Dublin.
We booked into Cassidy's hotel for our last night - Cassidy's is literally around the corner from where we stayed last week, and it turned out to be quite nice and reasonably priced. Accommodation in Dublin this week will be at a premium as it is the final of the Gaelic Football this Sunday between Dublin and Kerry - I am going to be supporting Kerry - after spending the last couple of days in Kerry Country!!!
We booked into our Musical Pub Tour at Gogarty's pub and joined a huge crowd for a night of traditional Irish Music and a couple of pubs - basically the group was full of Americans who probably have never heard an Irish song in their life, so after a couple of pubs, Nadeen and I left the group and did our own pub crawl!
Thanks to Peter, we found O'Donoghues Pub - home of the Dubliners - and the place was jumping - people everywhere. We managed to position ourselves near the music and enjoyed some great entertainment there - including a great rendition of Grace - my second favourite song of the trip - behind Galway Girls.
After O'Donoghues, we found another pub - O'Neills that was playing some great music and we propped there until stumps and Nadeen managed to get the guy to sing Galway Girls for us…..a nice way to finish off in Dublin.
We returned to our hotel where the bar was opened until 2am so we decided to finish off in style - drinking Baileys and I finished off by drinking Jameson - it certainly helps you sleep!!
We have basically driven around most of Ireland and whilst it has been a quick trip, it certainly has given us a feel for the place and there are numerous places that we would like to return to and spend more time in - as well as see all of the other places that we have not even seen yet.
It has been a great experience, we have driven over 1700 kilometres in the week that we have been here, met lots of great locals, drank plenty of Guinness and listened to and sang lots of Irish songs…..
Unfortunately it is now time to start thinking about heading home - we leave Dublin on Friday afternoon at 6.30pm local time, fly to Manchester, then onto Dubai then arrive in Melbourne around 5.30am Sunday.
