From Basel I went back to Deutschland to Weil am Rhine to visit the Vitra campus and design museum. The architecture was amazing. It felt like a whole different world.
The campus is set back from the rest of the city - It took 22 minutes to walk there and it was incredibly confusing. It is built in a circle with interesting buildings and functional sculptures. One of the pieces is a huge spiral slide, which was a lot of fun. You pick up a sliding carpet at the bottom and walk up eight flights of stairs to the top.
I visited the Vitra Haus, a very interesting building that looks like a pile of matches from above, and has large house-shaped windows with exhibits inside. Of course, my favourite was based on Alice and Wonderland with oversized furniture and decorations.
Each floor had a different theme showing off Vitra concepts, or classic pieces from different time periods. There was an entire floor dedicated to chairs, which I found quite amusing. The building was like an art gallery crossed with a very fancy version of an IKEA showroom, and when you arrive they give you a card to access a computerized catalogue to order items you like.
Further along there was a small graphic design building with pieces by students and books about design.
Next I went to Vitra Design Museum (pictured), which was built by Canadian Frank Gehry. Sadly they say he's American since he currently lives in LA. The exhibit inside was about Alexander Girard. His design interests were very diverse. I really loved a few of his interior design concepts and textile patterns, but his fascination with dolls I didn't understand at all.
When I got back to Basel I got my things ready for my first day back at work in our Basel office.
