Day 17 - Chris - Today we were anchored in the bay at Puerto Montt. We had booked a half day tour and caught the tender to dock before boarding our coach. First stop was the 'Alerce forest walk. As 2 coach loads turned up at similar times, this was slightly over congested and was not hugely interesting. we did see an alerce tree that is estimated to be 1600 years old.
The area was occupied in the mid 19th century by German speaking settlers, who were given land to entice them to the area. We next visited the German museum, which turned out to be more interesting than we though it would be. Many articles that were used in the 1800s that we'd not seen before - some quite ingenious for the era. Half an hour probably wasn't enough time there, as can be said about the next destination - Puerto Varas on Lake Llanqihue. this offered a great view over to the Osorno and Calbuco vocanoes, which erupted in 2015. This was a nice tsmall town with great views.
Back on board the ship, the sun had returned and wemanaged to get one last afternoon by the pool before heading South.
