Day 21 - Chris - Today were were docked in Ushuaia - also known as the end of the world. We took a 4WD trip through the Andes into Tierra del Fuego national park.
We enjoyed the sights on the journey - snow capped mountains and forests. We stopped by a lake and took a walk. The guides were providing information about local geography, some of which was quite interesting.
It was incredible seeing how many dead trees there are in the area. This is all due to the introduction of 25 beavers in the 1940s, which was expected to begin a fur trade. The fur trade never took off. Beavers have no natural predators in the area and the beaver population stands now at approx 100,000. They destroy trees to get wood to build their dams and the dams reroute water and flood areas killing even more trees. It is estimated that about 25% of the forest has been affected by beavers.
Stopped for food and Argentinian wine at a lodge on the way back.
Interestingly, the Pan American Highway ends here - starting in Alaska. It's about 19,000 miles long!
