10th October 2009 At 8am Jenny, Betty and I were picked up by our guide and began a scenic drive along the Atlantic coast, passing through the cosmopolitan suburb of Sea Point and Camps Bay with its glorious views of the Twelve Apostles, part of the Table Mountain range. We continue to the fishing village of Hout Bay and take a short boat trip to Duiker Island to view the Cape Fur Seals, which inhabit the island. There were local markets and lots of street entertainment. Set high up agains the mountains, overlooking Hout Bay Beach is Lichtenstein castle. The castle has 13 en-suite bedrooms, a library and a bar. It is only accessible by private road and helicopter and is situated on 8 500m² of land, which boasts a natural waterfall and swimming pool. The castle was previously run as a guesthouse until it was snapped up by its Russian owner for a cool $26m. The castle was originally built by South African businessman Reynier Fritz in 1986. The building was meant to replicate the Schloss Lichtenstein castle in southern Germany. We continue to follow the coastline along False Bay, by way of Simon's Town, where we visit the Penguin colony at Boulders Beach. They were everywhere, under cars in the car park, sunbaking, swimming, and I was amazed how close we could get to them. From here we travel to the Cape Point Nature Reserve, comprising over 17,300 acres of indigenous fauna and flora. Here we saw a variety of wildlife, baboons, rhebok, Ostrich, numerous birds and the elusive eland. The reserve is also one of the world's largest breeding grounds for tortoises. The majestic coastline offers drama worthy of being called "Nature's Greatest Show." We saw the union of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and felt the brisk wind that is dubbed the "Cape Doctor" for its presumed curative powers. We headed back to Capetown and watched the clouds slowly descend over Table Mountain. We freshened up and headed down to the Marina for Tea. It was an incredibly magnificent day.......................
