Hello again, have you missed us?
Just in case you were wondering we've been in Washington DC for a few days. We arrived after what should have been a 4 hour bus ride but due to traffic took 6. We're blaming the late hour of arrival for getting the US Congress building mixed up with The White House... Even the cab driver laughed at us!
Our basement room at the Windsor Inn Hotel was unique (no concept of night or day), especially after we read a Trip Advisor review of the place being haunted. It resulted in an interesting sleep.
So we had two full days in the Capital, the first day was spent visiting mainly monuments and memorials including;
-The 'real' White House (we were disappointed to see the President leave in a helicopter, meaning our lunch date was off!)
-Executive Office buildings
-Washington monument
-World War II memorial (definitely worth a visit, our favourite memorial of the day)
-Abraham Lincoln memorial & reflecting pool
-Thomas Jefferson memorial (allegedly the least visited, but that meant it was nice and quite)
-Korean War Veterans memorial
-George Mason memorial
-Franklin Roosevelt memorial (lead the US through the 1930's economic depression)
-Martin Luther King JR memorial
Day two was jam packed full of culture and history, up and down The Mall visiting a number of the Smithsonian museums including;
-The Freer Gallery
-National Air & Space Museum (would appeal to kids mainly, so S loved it)
-US Capitol Building
-National Museum of Natural History (Dino loving)
-National American History Museum (good presidential timeline, K enjoyed the geeky knowledge)
Although no two places should be compared, we're going to go right ahead and compare Washington DC with NYC. The streets are wider and greener in DC with not as many high rises. Less busy, people appearing more laid back and really into fitness, counting 33 joggers in one afternoon alone.
It's only been a week but we are already picking up the accent, worryingly what will we sound like after a whole year of different accents and languages!
Some of you reading this will be surprised that we haven't mentioned food yet in this post. Don't worry, we don't disappoint... We've done a lot of al fresco dining over the last few days mainly because of the weather being soooo hot! The bagels, watermelon and yogurt from Au Bon Pain were delicious. S created her own salad at a Mexican place and K devoured a Burrito which was good. YoCakes for dessert, where you get a cupcake and frozen yogurt combo as a sundae special, we stuck to coconut & vanilla cupcakes though.
Bus back to NYC for a quick stopover and a postal workers comment 'Welcome to New York, open your wallets' sums it all up, lol.
We have had feedback about our blog missing some of the detail... so hope the above satisfies you. We can't promise this much detail all the time, you're lucky we're currently on a 10 hr Amtrak train to Montreal, Canada...
