We had really crap weather in the morning, light rain and wind. it had been raining and windy all night so I didn't sleep very well. Unless it's sunny there isn't really much to do on the resort so it looked like it was going to be a very boring day. We chilled out in our hut until lunch time then we sat inside chatting to Jo and Jake for a couple of hours, they were leaving the resort today so we waited with them while they waited for their transfer boat. The rain had stopped by then but it was still very cloudy, we were very bored. Suddenly a French guy asked us if we wanted to go with him to Waya Island to watch the rugby final between the local islands! Chris has been hoping we could watch a game since we arrived in Fiji so of course he jumped at the chance! The game was starting soon so we had to go straight away. We said good bye to Jo and Jake and hurried to get our waterproofs just in case it rained again. Chris paid the boat guy $40 for us to go in his little boat then he walked us through the village to where it was. It was interesting to see the village, they didn't have much but everyone we saw was smiling. The kids were especially excited to see us as they walked along with us. Then a guy named Joe asked us where we were going. Chris told him and he got excited, he was one of the players but had already missed his boat so he was really pleased when he found out we were going. After a little persuasion with our boat guy he joined us going across. A couple of others were also in the boat. We sat near the front which was a big mistake. The waves were so choppy we bounced up and down landing on our arses hard! I couldn't help but yelp every time. Twenty long minutes it took to get to the other island! Our butts were bruised when we got there lol.
We walked along the beach and over to the rugby pitch, we made it with just five minutes before kick off. There were a lot of local people and a few other tourists watching the game. Wayalailai were playing against Octopus Resort, it was a very slow start and Chris kept complaining they weren't any good. The local people loved it though and were cheering out loud. A group of local women were hilarious to watch they were shouting abuse at a group of other women on the other side! Half way through the game it started to piss down and the temperature dropped slightly. I had the camera and didn't want it to get wet so I huddled together under a small shelter with the officials while Chris sat out in his waterproof jacket. It didn't stop the game, if anything the rain encouraged the players to play even harder. A small boy sat in front of me in only shorts and a thin t-shirt, he was obviously cold because he was shivering and blowing on his hands. I felt sorry for the kid so I took off my waterproof jacket and wrapped it around him. He was a little embarrassed at first and some people giggled at him lol. The team from our village were winning 9:5 until a last minute, much disputed try from the other village. The game ended 10:9 with the other team winning. Joe said they would replay the game next week but Chris isn't too sure that was true. I looked around and suddenly I couldn't see the kid with my jacket, I got worried he had run off with it but then I saw him. I quickly went over to him and got it back in case he got any ideas.
The guys got changed and we got in the boat and went back to our island, it rained the whole time but we didn't care anymore, we were already soaked through. I sat further to the back of the boat this time in front of the french guy. It was still bouncy but not as bad as sitting at the front. When we got back Chris helped pull the boat back onto the beach while the French guy just watched! Then we went for a shower and got changed to warm up. It was then that I noticed a huge split in the crutch of my trousers! Oh my god I had been sitting with my legs open in front of the French dude the whole way back! How embarrassing, I wondered why he looked awkward. We headed to the restaurant and got a cup of tea each before heading to dinner at 6:30pm. The staff played their guitars and sang their songs again which was nice. We had a bowl of kava with them after dinner then went back to our room to watch one of the films Mibs gave us called Soul Plane. I thought it was finny but Chris thought it was alright. After Chris put some music on so I wouldn't think of tsunamis and we went to bed.
