Week 22- Australia (Port Douglas) Day 6
We had a big day ahead of us today. We were exploring the beautiful rainforest which is Cape Tribulation. We got up early, had our breakfast and was in the car by 9am. Starting the day with Gemma nearly running over Brad as she didn't realise he wasn't in the car, it was rather entertaining! We drove to the very top of Cape Trib up a bumpy and unpathed road. We decided to go to the top and work our way down. Our first stop was Emmagen Creek, we had to be really careful here and not enter the water as it is the home of CROCODILES. We went for a walk down to the swimming hole highlighted on our tourist map but it was down a track that had a very old sign saying no entry so we didn't stay for too long, we definitely didn't do any swimming!
We then went to Dubuji broad walk, it was amazing to wonder around the rainforest and see all the different wildlife. We spotted a strangler tree which we had learnt about on Fraser Island. They are really cool but actually kill the tree they 'strangle' themselves around. Our next point of call was Cape Trib tea.. We were all expecting a nice brew but it actually turned out to be a field where they grew the tea and a little hut with boxed tea bags that you could buy by putting money in the honesty box, so that's what we did!
We then tried some local natural ice cream.. Had to be done. It was macadamia, jackfruit and black sapote and wattle seed. They all tasted really nice! It was a bit like chocolate and coffee. We shared a tasting pot between two! We then drove down to Cow Bay, the beach was beautiful and as we walked on we were greeted by a giant lizard. We had a bit of a mooch along the beach, Brad attempted to skim some rocks and failed miserably so we moved on!
We tried one so we had to try the other.. You guessed it.. Ice cream! Our second ice cream of the day, they were really creamy! We were very full after this! We walked around another broad walk called Marrdja before heading to Alexandra lookout. You could see right across to Port Douglas and it was an amazing view! It was then time to jump back on the ferry across. On our way to Port Douglas we spotted off at Mossman Gorge, I loved it here! We took a bus up from the car park, walked around and over a swing bridge. It was very peaceful and picturesque. Brad nearly jumped in the freezing cold water at the end but chickened out as he didn't have a towel!
Arriving in Port Douglas we quickly picked up some dinner from the supermarket then checked into Dougies hostel. We decided to hire bikes for the afternoon.. Because we hadn't done enough already! Within about 10 minutes getting down the road my pedal fell off and the breaks didn't work particularly well so that was rather amusing! Me and Brad tried to put it back on but ended up walking it back to get a different one. When we were finally back on the road we cycled down to the sea front and had a drink in a pretty little bar to watch the sunset. We all had a cider so it was quite funny watching us all cycle home in the dark with no lights!
When we got back we made some dinner then had a few drinks in our room while chilling out. There was a talent show going on in the hostel but we thought we would give others a chance to win so didn't join in ;-) so after a very busy day we all hit the sacks!
