Week 3- Cambodia (Siem Reap) Day 6
So today was the day we got to see Angkor Wot at sunrise. We were both so excited. We got up at 4.30am which really felt like the middle of the night! We had organised a tuk tuk to collect us from outside our hostel at 5. On the journey there we didn't have a clue where we was going obviously is was pitch black because they have no streets lights and there wasn't many people about. We had to go and buy a ticket first from the office, they took a picture of us when we paid. Little did we know that this picture was printed on our tickets, let's just say we look a tad grumpy!
We arrived at Angkor Wot in good timing, we had about 20 minutes before the sun would start rising. We managed to find a good spot.. The crowds were now forming! There was a giant lake in front which made it all that much more magnificent because of all the reflections. The sunrise was completely and utterly stunning, we both got some amazing photos. It was definitely worth getting up at silly o'clock for.
On our way back to the hostel we decided to check out the local bakery because we were starving! This tasted so good, and so fresh! Once we got back to the room we realised how exhausted we were already and it was about 7.30am so we managed to get a few more hours sleep in before check out.
Our new hostel 'Okay I Villa' was lovely, it was more like a hotel than a hostel and only cost us £4.97 a night! So this was very happy days, it had an amazing swimming pool on the roof top! We had planned with our tuk tuk driver to go out again at 2.30pm to see some more temples. Initially we thought we would have a chilled out afternoon and do the other temples the next day, however, we found out our ticket was an all day pass and we didn't want to buy another ticket tomorrow. Therefore, we manned up and powered on through!
While we were chilling in our room and facetiming home we suddenly realised that there was torrential rain!! We was worried it wasn't going to stop before the afternoon! I had my rain mac out prepared ready to take it on, although, it stopped about 10 minutes before we left! It had actually cleared the air a bit so it wasn't so humid!
The first place we visited was Ta Prohm. This is commonly known as the Jungle Temple and is where Tomb Raider was filmed. This was a really cool temple and clearly extremely old. A lot of the roots from the huge trees had been growing through the temple itself. We also visited a few more temples but by this point we were melting in the sun and just too hot to take anything in so we headed back.
In the evening we went to a local restaurant which had a buffet and show. The food here was delicious! We ate so much food and tried lots of new dishes! They had everything from noodles, curries, sushi, BBQ and all sorts of salads. There were chefs on the restaurant floor cooking up different food while you waited which was also really cool. We decided to be brave and also tried lots of Cambodian puddings. None of them were labelled and they all looked completely random but we dived straight in. There were some we quite enjoyed and some that were absolutely awful- they all had very weird textures!
The show was traditional Cambodian music and dance. It was a bit of an odd show but we did enjoy ourselves. I think there was a plot throughout all the dances but we hadn't picked up on it. It didn't help that we had a creepy weird man from Holland trying to talk to us the whole time. He had taken a Thai hotel staff member out for dinner.. It was so strange as they couldn't communicate what so ever!!
