After heading out of Lancelin I worked my way north to the Pinnacles. The Pinnacles were not bad, nothing particularly exciting though. A good opportunity to test out the Camera in some high light situations. Took about 15 mins to drive around the loop that leads through "The Pinnacles" there were a few points where I thought Martha was going to take a bit of a pinnacle with her... The track definitely wasnt designed with a 60 Series landcruiser in mind...
After the pinnacles I stopped off at the gift shop and bought a WA National Parks Pass... Apparently there isnt a Pass that gets you into all national parks... you have to buy one from each state... odd considering they are "National Parks" not state parks...
After the pinnacles I headed North again to Jurien Bay. My initial plan was to spend the night in Jurien Bay. I got into Jurien Bay around Lunchtime so I stopped off at a little row of shops and made lunch in a little park out the front. There wasnt alot to see or do in Jurien Bay so after lunch I packed up and kept heading North.
I tried to keep as close to the coast as I could pulling off on a few dirt tracks in the hope they would lead to a nice private surf break but most led to nothing or an average little beach with no waves.
Arrived in Dongara in the afternoon and pulled into the first Beach I could find. Decided to get out and go for a surf... Was pretty average break and way too much seaweed kept getting caught on my leg rope and dragging me backwards.
Headed further into Dongara and found a nice little break in front of a campsite. Parked beside the campsite and sat on the shore testing out the new camera on some surfers that were out in the surf. Wishing I got a bigger zoom lense but still got some ok shots.
Slept the night in the back on the car in the Carpark. Woke up in Tuesday morning and there was reasonable swell. was about to go out for a surf when a Ranger pulled up and told me that I had to get out of town... I was a bit pissed as there was no sign saying I couldnt camp there (and there was signs at most other car parks near the beach that I have been at). Decided not to push it in case he tried to fine me.
I drove a little further north (still in Dongara) and found a decent beach I was sitting there for about 30 seconds watching the surf when some guy on a scooter pulled up behind me and started texting then rode away... Something about him seemed sus so I jumped back in the car and started driving away... as I was driving away from the Beach the same ranger passed me going the other way (I have a feeling he was getting the scooter to spy and me and make sure I actually left town).
Headed further north and stopped off at a random beach in the middle of nowhere called Seven Mile Beach. There was another camper there. Started chatting to the guy who was a Paramotorer (I think thats how its spelt) and he was setting up for a flight. Headed out for a surf (not great swell).
Headed north to Geraldton. Arrived in Geraldton about midday and headed up to the "Hobo Mansion". Before I left perth I had a look at couchsurfing.org and found a house in Geraldton with two girls around my age, Karis and Kirst. Kirst wasnt working during the day so she showed me around Geraldton and then headed off to work.
(Couchsurfing.org is a website where people offer their place to stay for a night or two for travellers... Its an international community of travellers and really interesting people... When you stay with someone you put a review up on the website and they put a review of you up so other people can see that you are nice and honest etc. I am intending on using it as I travel around the country to meet the locals as I go)
I charged my phone and laptop and then headed out to Drummonds the local surf spot... Wasnt that great so I moved a bit further south to Glenfield where there was a good left beach break that was about 6 foot. Took a few beatings and then caught a huge long left so was very happy with the break.
Went back to the girls house and had Dinner with Karis. Slept the night in their spare room. Woke up and pottered around the car organising it for storage for 3 weeks. Went for a surf then grabbed lunch and dropped the car off at the yard of a construction company that is owned by the friend of a guy I work with. Caught a cab to the airport and ended the first leg of my trip around the country...
Stay tuned for further adventures :)
