Today is Sunday and we are excited.I did not eat breakfast today because I was fasting.God had used Emma and me in a powerful way last night so I fasted this morning to thank God for everything he is doing through me and for the power he has given me. We had a pleasant walk to the church. When we were near the church the guy sweeping the park across from the church was sweeping with a bunch of leafy branches tied together.I guess it was his homemade broom. When we went into the church we took our seats and it was so sweet the piano player - who was probably in her seventies - was playing traditional Brazilian hymns on the piano. We had a blended service that had some traditional and some contemporary music. The Choir had beautiful voices as there were 35 of them standing in the balcony at the rear of the church. Their voices flowed across the entire sancturary. The dancers were here again this morning and they danced with all their might. They were a pleasure to watch with all of their youthful enthusiasm. We had a pretty long worship session and then Bill started our morning with his talk on guidance.Afterwards we had a standard "Coca-Cola" altar call where we prayed for people to search themselves and see if there was anything in their life that was a barrier between them and God.Coca-cola was our code word for a standard altar call where we have a single file line across the front of the church. Dr Pepper was the code word for a prayer tunnel, Guarana (pronounced Gwa-na-naa) meant there was food in the fellowship hall and let go eat and Pepsi Cola meant it was time to go.There were also other altar calls but we would receive specific instruction on them after the Holy Spirit had inspired Betty and Harry and to what those altar calls should be.
Last and not least was Emma speaking on the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Authority. She gave a rousing talk. She challenged all of the people in the church to accept the Authority that the Holy Spirit gave them and to go forth and operate in that Authority.Betty then briefly covered The Promise of the Father and we prayed for all of those who came forth to receive the baptism of the Spirit. It was a very powerful time of prayer and there were many that came to be prayed for.Today we had many people who had not come before. I think some of the ministers had returned to their churches because of Sunday services. The church was still full. There were several people that rested in the spirit and we had to move around a lot because there were so many people at the front that were kneeling, being anointed and prayed for that we had to just pick a spot and lead the next prayer recipient to that spot. The Holy Spirit was flowing so freely it was wonderful. It was not a wild scene it was a very peaceful and pleasant service at the front of the church.I think too often we have seen shows on TV that skew our perception of things of the Spirit. When Lynn and I first went to an Aldersgate event we were surprised at how gentlemanly the Holy Spirit is. You can invite him in but he does not take over - he just gives you the power we need to do as God would will us.
At lunch a small Brazilian girl came up and wanted to hear "The Americans speak" She had never heard a real live American speak.Emma blessed her with her wonderful southern accent and when I spoke to her she became shy and ran back to her mothers table.Someone else asked me if I had my own TV show back in America - I laughed and said no - I was just a simple computer technician.Someone else asked if I was a doctor because I prayed for his feet and I had to "adjust his legs" in the process - he thought that was cool to see that happen.I told him I had just referred him to the great Physician and it was not me that did the healing. After lunch we were blessed with the opportunity to return to the hotel for a nap.Steve and I each had our own single bed and we thought they were joking when they asked if we had one full sized bed in our room.Emma and Virginia are sharing one bed. This is a wonderful hotel. We have great hot showers. The ones at the mission are good but there we need to conserve the hot water and then it is only warm and does not flow with a full stream. For the first time in two trips here I have seen a Brazilian TV. They show a lot of American movies with Portuguese subtitles.
After our afternoon naps - that were wonderfully refreshing - we returned to the church. On the way back to the church we took a short cut.On one of the streets was closed because it was Sunday. There was a large group of teenagers having a skateboard rally. They even had a bull horn to announce the activities. It actually appeared that they were having good clean fun.One thing we have seen a lot of teenagers and people in general is making out in public. There is way too much purple in the park. (Boys are blue and girls are red and if you mix them you get purple -GCUMC youth group knows what purple is - don't ya!!!!)No purple in the public park please.
Dinner was in the canteen (they call a fellowship hall a canteen) we were leaving and heard them singing "DeColores" They were amused that I knew the words and I sang it so beautifully - NOT!At the evening service it was nice because ewe just had to show up - we really did not have to do anything except worship. On the last day of Aldersgate events we always have the church gather around their pastors and pray for them. The life of a pastor is hard and it is good for them to feel the congregation's prayers for them.Harry challenged them to continue to pray for their pastors daily. It was moving to see the pastors (Just Centrals pastors) kneeling and the altar and then the prayer intercessors for the church surrounded them and then as many as could gathered at the front to lay hands on and pray for the pastors. We had a hug party afterwards and said our good byes as most of the people will be back at work and school tomorrow when we have our last meal with the church (lunch).
We made it back to the hotel a little early and we started to pack because we load the bus at 9:30 on Monday and then we are going to a nursing home to pray.Lunch will be at the church and then I think we are going to shop a little before the long bus ride back to the mission.I thank you all for you prayers and keep praying because God has been keeping us busy and we have a lot of missions ahead of us.May God Bless You All, Bobby.
