The Philippines. Next stop: Palawan
It was time to get away from the bright lights of the city and get to the beach. The Philippines boasts some the best beaches, snorkelling and diving in the world and I was desperate to see some. Palawan is the second largest island of the 7000 in the Philippines and it did not disappoint!
We flew into Puerto princesa and stayed at Victoria cottages for a few nights. First day was a trip to the world famous underground river. Deemed one of the new seven natural wonders of the world it was certainly interesting. However if you don't like crowds, or bright orange helmets, don't go. It is so so so touristy. Dad was really struggling not to lose his temper as we were herded around like cattle. The cave itself was really cool with huge natural stalactite and stalagmite structures. The second day was a tour around honda bay and the Islands there. Now this is what I had been waiting for! Incredible bounty Islands with white beaches and the best snorkelling I've ever done. I saw starfish!!!
Our next stop was further north in the paradise that is el nido. We booked an all inclusive tour through the same guesthouse which included two tours around the different Islands and lagoons. The first day was amazing as we got our own private boat that avoided all the other groups. Lunch was a BBQ feast on the beach and I tasted the nicest BBQ chicken I've ever had! The snorkelling was again incredible and the scenery was just breath taking! On our next tour, on my birthday, we were joined by this sweet American couple. However unlike yesterday the captain claimed he had to follow the crowd. Our first lagoon was filled by at least 200 people. Not paradise at all. Mum managed to sweet talk them round though and we changed our route. So the rest of the day was amazing! The most surreal birthday ever but so beautiful! The crew even made me a birthday salad and caught me a lobster to eat. Nice!
But sadly our time on the beach has come to an end and it was time to go home. El nido is truly stunning but won't stay 'quiet' for long. They predict it to be the next Boracay so get there quick folks!
