This morning after breakfast we all boarded the coach and drove for an hour an half into the national park to the ger camp. We were very impressed with our new accomodation for the next two nights, our round tent contained four single beds, a small sink, a table and a fire buring stove. However, our toilet facilities left a little to be desired as it was a small hut with two toilet cubicles which contained a long drop which a few of us were slightly worried about falling down :)....luckily none of us did but baring ur bottom in those tempertures isn't a great deal of fun. After lunch which was really good traditional mongolian food, we all went for a hike through the mountains to view turtle rock and visit a buddhist monastry that was built into the mountain. The walk and the views were amazing but the temperatures were still very cold around -20 degrees however the sun was shining. After our 3 hour hike we all took time to have a rest in our warm ger before dinner. After dinner most of us went to bed very early as we were all very tired from the full on days we'd encountered, whilst some of the others went and watched a film about mongolia. It was quite hard to sleep as a lady came in every three hours throughout the night to make sure our fire was still burning so we didn't get cold. The next day we all got up and visited a traditional nomadic family in their ger camp. We got to ask them numerous questions about their lifestyle and took them gifts. We were told that we should accept anything they offered us which included salty milk tea and some dried yoghurt which can be kept for up to two years. These things were interesting to try but not all that appetising. In the afternoon some of the group went horse riding but we decided it was too cold to sit still on a horse for an hour so we went sledging instead. It was really really fun and nothing like sledging back home as there was at least two foot of snow and massive hills to go down. There was a lot of screaming and falling off involved but it was a good laugh. After dinner our honcho taught us all how to play a traditional mongolia game called anklebones. You can play numerous different games with sheep and goat anklebones, it was great fun and we have some interesting photos. We then all watched a film about Ghengis Khan which fascinating as it taught us all about the history of Mongolia. The next morning after breakfast we took the coach back to Ulaanbaatar where we showered as we hadn't been able to for the last two days at the camp. We then all visited the national museum of Mongolia which was really educational and we learnt all about how the country has developed over the years and the relationship it has with other countries. We then went for a very late lunch which was an all you can eat mongolian bbq. It involved choosing raw ingredients and sauces which were then cooked on a huge grill with a great deal of skill. We then went back to the hostel where we chilled out for the rest of the evening and had an early night as we had to be up at 6.30am to catch our train to china.
