Arrived at 1pm and took cycle rickshaws to our hotel, Catherine was really ill through the night on the train so she saw a doctor and then rested. I met the rest of the group for an evening river cruise on the Ganges which also included musicians on the boat and a candle and flower ceremony. The prayer ceremonies took place on the ghats of the river and were rather impressive with many people watching, mainly pilgrims who would have travelled from a great distance just to make it to the ceremony. We got cycle rickshaws to the river and back to the hotel and went to bed as we had an early start. The next morning i got up at 4am and left catherine in bed as she was still feeling ill and i went back to the river ganges for the sunrise cruise. We got cycle rickshaws there again and got to see the area of the ghats where cremations take place, i found this quite a weird experience as its not something you would ever see at home. We saw people washing and bathing in the river which is actually quite dirty but seen as holy, therefore everyone goes in it. It was quite surreal to find out that some people travel to the ganges just so they can die there as they believe it is such a holy place and they want to be cremated there. After the river cruise we got off the boat and walked along some of the ghats and through the streets of old varanasi which were very small and crowded even as early as 8 am. We then got cycle rickshaws back to the hotel where i slept for a while and then went out shopping. The rest of the afternoon we both spent relaxing and packing ready to leave early the next morning.
