I'm FINALLY here!!
I arrived yesterday after a boring and uncomfortable 24 hours in Johannesburg airport, I think the staff there thought I'd moved in, they kept seeing this white girl with a backpack as big as her and a lovely skirt wandering around the place. But anyway I made it here eventually, there were about 20 people on the little plane that took us here and although I slept most of the way, as I hadn't last night because I was worried my bag would get stolen, I got the most amazing view of the Zambezi river and in the distance Victoria Falls!!
Everything is so green over here, there are trees everywhere and the weather is so warm. Ivor from the volunteer company met me at the airport and took me to the guest house I am staying in, I have my own room with a double bed and an ensuite! Not what I was expecting at all, it's basic and there's no hot water but it's great. We wandered around Livingstone yesterday, it's quite small and I do get stared at a lot (not just because of the sexy skirts I had to purchase as surprisingly I didn't own anything that covered my knees!) because they don't have white people around here but everybody is so friendly.
I decided that while I'm away I'm going to do everything and try everything possible; so when I was offered chargrilled caterpillars for dinner with nshimba, by the family who run the guest house, I accepted and actually they're really nice!! I expected them to be chewy and gross but they are so burnt that they are really crunchy, I liked them (no judging!). Nshimba is the staple food here, it looks like smooth mashed potato but is really sticky, you roll it into a ball with your hands and eat it with the caterpillars.
I had a brilliant 12 hours sleep, not needing a blanket and keeping the fan on all night. I woke this morning refreshed and so excited to be in Africa! I showered for the first time since Tuesday!! I like not wearing make up or caring how I look because I know no-one. We're off to meet the Pastor who runs the Orphange this morning and then to meet another Pastor who runs the Church I will be working at on the weekends (except this Sunday when I'm off to the Falls!!).

Alex Westlake Hi! I have come across your blog as I am looking into whether or not to go volunteering with Love Volunteers! I haven't been able to find many reviews of Love Volunteers from people who have actually gone through them so I'm just wondering if you could give us any info/advice about the company and whether or not they are actually legit? The prices of Love Volunteers compared to other companies such as A Broader View are alot cheaper! We are just basically wanting to know if we are not going to get killed haha :)
