After a few failed attempts to find a small town complete with carpark and pub - who could believe that this could be such a difficult task - we settled opposite the Moeraki Tavern, where we cooked a feast of toasted cheese sandwiches in our frying pan. We then head to the aforementioned Tavern, a short lived experience as it closed at 7pm???? No panic though, as there was a posh restaurant down the road, Fleur's Place, so we head in to see if they will let us stop in for just a drink. A seafood restaurant, endorsed by Rick Stein, we were stupid to think that we would limit ourselves to just a drink. After an hour of salivating over the menu we finally gave in and treated ourselves to half a fish pie and cheesecake. They were both divine.
The next morning, it is time to move on again, stopping only for a walk along the beach and some photo posing with the boulders that Moeraki is famous for. Local legend has it that the boulders are the petrified remains of people and boat parts from a boat that ran aground at Shag Point, slightly further south. I am still of the opinion that they are in fact just big rocks.
