Caroline's World Tour
So, here we are in Kanchanburi, home of the famous Bridge Over the River Kwai. We got here yesterday, and to be honest, we were just grateful to arrive in one piece! Thai beer is stronger than its English counterpart, so despite not having THAT much to drink the night before, we were feeling less than sparkly and not exactly looking forward to the bus journey over here, but hey, we thought at least we'd be able to catch up on a bit of sleep. Not so - the bus turned out to be a minibus with just us two as passengers, and three Thai men (why? Why would you need more staff than passengers?!?) to escort us. Ok, still not too bad.....but then one of them decides to try touching Sarah's leg. Needless to say there were some severe sense of humour failures at this point, as we had visions of never being seen again. Thankfully, this was just our hysteria gland overreacting, and we made it here safe and sound, and actually one of the 3 seems to be quite a nice man, so we're not too worried about the trip back! We'd booked to stay in a hostel here (mainly cause it had a pool!) but when we gave the name the guy told us we couldn't possibly stay there as it was an israeli hostel (yes, they actually have their own hostels, and Amy had warned us about them!) and we wouldn't be welcome. When it became apparent that this was his honest opinion, and not just a ploy to get us to stay in a hostel he owned, we decided to take his advice, and instead are staying in a very nice guest house, even if it is lacking in both pool and air con! So yesterday was a dramatic day by our standards, and of course we were worn out after all the trauma, so decided to have a nice rest before going to watch the football. There were quite a few English people in the bar we were in so it was a nice atmosphere when we won!
Today we were booked to go on a tour of the Erawan waterfall and Hellfire Pass, as recommended by Sarah's brother from the time he spent here. But the woman we booked it through came to find us while we were watching the football to tell us we'd have to wait until the day after, as there weren't enough people. Thankfully we had the time to do this, otherwise it would have been a bit awkward! So today we decided to take ourselves off to the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre, otherwise known as the Death Railway Museum, and the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery. The Museum was fantastic, very informative and well put together, but absolutely heartbreaking. So many men died to build a railway that was used for less than 2 years....it seems like such a waste. Thoroughly miserable, we then headed out to the cemetery, which, needless to say, did nothing to put a smile on our faces! We also tried to visit the Jeath War Museum, located right by the bridge, but this turned out to be not very well organised and not air conditioned, and we decided we couldn't cope! So after checking out the Bridge we headed back to the hostel, and we've been in this internet cafe for hours now putting on new photos! We're going to try and watch the Australia game tonight, and then fingers crossed we'll be going on our tour tomorrow - really hope so cause I'm really looking forward to a dip in that waterfall!!
