We started our adventure by going along the Amazon on a speedboat for 3hours. When we arrived at our lodge we were immediately impressed with how rustically beautiful the set up was. With thatched roofs and raised wooden walkways on stilts joining the communal dining area, viewing platform and private rooms. The lodge only has 4 private rooms and 1 more basic room that sleeps 5. The 1st nite we were in the basic room and the next night we had our private room with its own bathroom and balcony with a hammock on.
After lunch we chilled on the porch taking in the views. Right in front of the lodge were some amazing birds. Lots of little bright yellow & black birds, a brown Hawk with a white face, a Kingfisher & a big black eagle that sat for ages looking down at the kitchen area. Also in the river you can see lots of catfish (which is what we had for lunch as was very tasty). After taking that all in, we went for a 2 hour walk in the jungle. Even though it wasn´t dusk, there was still a ridiculous amount of mosquitoes and the humidity was intense.
That night we went out in a canoe looking for caiman, but sadly we didn´t get to see any. The next morning we left at 6am to go bird watching. We got to see 3 different types of kingfishers along with lots of other birds that we can´t remember the names of.We were lucky to see squirrel monkey (that are about the size of cats and brown) and also the more rare black monkeys!
After breakfast we went fishing in little canoes. In the 1st 10 minutes I had caught 3 fish and screamed every time they flapped around the boat on the line whilst the guide took the hook out. I guess I´m a bit of girl when it comes to having fish swim around my feet at the bottom of the boat in not a lot of water, I really didn't like it and really scream when he smashed the bigger ones over the head with his knife.Stu was beginning to get impatient with not catching any fish, but after a while he had success and began to really enjoy himself.I on the other hand was over it and was getting annoyed with the mosquitoes and the splashing fish. After eating our catch for lunch we spent the afternoon chilling in the hammocks on the balcony. The heat and humidity of the jungle can be exhausting! Fully rested we took a boat trip to the nearest village. We walked around the little wooden village handing out colouring pencils to the kids and being greeted by the locals with smiles and gestures.
That night we went tarantula and snake hunting. It was pitch dark and I was again being a big girl as I hate snakes. So repellented up to the max, torches in hand we strided from the safety of our lodge into the Amazon jungle. Within a couple of minutes our guide found a adult tarantula. It was actually rather cute looking, they call them jungle cats (the domestic kind) due to their fur.
The next morning we took the slow boat back towards Iquitos. We spotted a few pink dolphins on the way before arriving at the town of Nautica where we had lunch in someones house. The nearest road back to Iquitos which we had to get to was a cruel 10km walk through the jungle. It was hot, hot, hot! but beautiful. We stopped at a local´s isolated home along the way and he fed us deliciously sweet starfruit and custard apples.
After 3 hot, humid, mosquito filled days in the jungle it was good to get back to our insect free room with TV and comfy bed. We spent 1 more day in Iquitos before flying back to Lima where we spent a day in the historical centre. There was something big going on with stages, big screens and music in the centre and we got interviewed on national TV in Spanish about what we thought of Lima. That was a test for our Spanish!
