We arrived back in Phnom Penh in the afternoon and organised to have a cyclo tour of the city later on, so that we would be able to see as much as possible, as we were leaving the next day. Pete still wasn't walking great, so I headed out after to lunch to find a wi-fi café and update our blog. While I sat there bolts of lightning and cracks of thunder started, before long torrential rain started to pour down. I thought it would be a brief storm so sat back and enjoyed my coffee and while watching out the window an elephant walked by. It was clear after an hour and a half the rain was not easing up, so I decided to get a tuk tuk back to the hotel, which was only a short walk, but I would be drenched just stepping out the door. Once outside I realised the streets were flooded, in a short time the water was covering the roads and outside our hotel the water came up to my ankles.
I showed Pete the photo of the elephant and went downstairs to take some of the flooding to show him. It looked like our cyclo tour would be cancelled and I would not get to see the Royal Palace. The next day we were due to leave at 8, so after a restless night's sleep I got up and 6 and headed to the Palace just to see it from the outside. Already the city was packed with locals going to the market and getting their children to school. It was lovely and a cool, such a pleasant walk and then to see the glistening roofs of the Palace. The gates were obviously closed so I could only see so much, but it was enough and I even popped my head through the gate for a brief glimpse. At the park where I stood taking photos it was full of people exercising, feeding the birds and generally making use of the public space. I stopped at a bakery for some doughnuts on the way back and then it was time to leave.
