Last week with the kids was great fun - challenging but fun - After trying to diplomaticaly introduce some structure into the creche (the teachers are quite hostile and seem to want chaos) I managed to discuss taking 10 of the older ones (4-5yrs) aside to try and do an activity (art or drawing etc) .... she (the evil teacher) agreed which was a relief and she said why didnt i wait in the next room (a derilict garage) .... well she then decided she needed to clean some rugs (or something) and sent 45 kids aged 3-6 in to see "teacher Cara" as i am known ..... what can i say (COW) ... anyway i took it on the chin and decided it was an endurance test and I survived believe it or not (they were surprised as was I) and even though i do have to shout to be heard sometimes which isnt great i am actually really good with children!!! Who would have thought it eh ..... got home from work on Monday at 1pm ... and slept till 4 ha ha ha ,.... good with the kids yes but mentally exhausted!!!
Tuesday to Friday was then much easier - after peeling the babies off me as i arrive in the mornings (there is a little boy called Ethan who I want to bring home - Mum what ya think??) I am now in charge of all the older girls which is a class of about 16 - im really enjoying it and have been doing my homework drawing posters for the walls (they really have nothing) so im now great at shapes, colours, fruits, insects, weather etc :) ... ooo and im learing my prayers off by heart (sigh) ....We have been finger painting, paper cutting, making paper planes and against my judgement platting my hair (i came home with 3 dreads the other day i needed help to cut out!!!)
Evenings are mostly quiet but we had a good social on wednesday at Cape to Cuba in Kalk bay overlooking the harbour and Thursday we had a great time up in Spier near stellenbosch where I went to pet a Cheetah (scary) and had a great dinner out at Moyo restuarant - all african themed with bands and dancing ... hmm ok so maybe evenings are not quiet!! Friday I helped at the surf project in the afternoon then chilled in the eve and then we (me and my roommate Maria) spent the weekend in Hermanus with other volunteers and our driver Meschak. Some of them went srak diving but i chilled on the cliffs watching the whales with a bag of fush and chups :)
So now its Monday! another good day with the kids today AND the staff - after alot of perseverance they now want to be friends and I think we are having a xmas party in the township which will be intersting!!! ... and right now im down in Muizenburg at the beach catching up on emails and going to see the street kids surf :) ... Really enjoying myself here now - cant believe im almost half way through the 6 months!! Time is flying!!! xx

Pauline Hi Cara, Sorry it's taken me so long to write, but I have been hearing all your stories through your mum and now finally got to read your blog itself. The safari adventuresa are great and now I am really enjoying your descriptions of the kindergarten, it sounds as if you are doing really good things with the childrena and enjoying yourself, which is great. Poster production reminded me of my time at the school in Kenya, where I did this, too! (Something on blood circulation in the body for my biology class - the things one finds oneself doing..) It's so wonderful you are doing all this, I am so happy for you and look forward to further blogs! p xxx
