Peter and Caroline's Most Excellent Adventure!!!
HOLY HELL! It is hot in that there jungle, or and by the way it is quite humid too, 95% plus on some days!
What a place! After a plane we got into a wagon, then into a boat for 3 hours up the Napa river, then into a canoe for a brief trip through a lagoon and than there it was, the biggest hut in the jungle you have ever seen!
The setting is amazing, the weather is extrodinary and the wildlife is bloody everywhere!
We spent the better part of a week litterally in the jungle, the lodges we were in were just bamboo platforms and the walls didn't reach the roof, they were just to keep out the wind, awesome!
Had bats and something large and furry in the room at night charging around as if they owned the place ( I suppose they did really!) Pete spent the night with a torch in one hand and insect repellant in the other(city boy!) and Caroline just did her usual and slept through everything. There was a colony of leaf cutter ants outside our bedroom window, a tree sloth by the toilet and a wasp nest next to the hamock, the whole place was alive and everything moved!
We went for guided walks through the jungle, caught lizards with our bare hands, saw spiders the size of birds and birds the size of people! Then we went up and observation lookout 130 feet up in a Capok tree, had a look at the jungle canopy, saw red howler monkeys sleeping, birds of all shapes colours and sizes.
We went out into the surrounding area to meet with the indiginous people of the Il Pilchey area, the Cuitcho, they taught us how to use a blow pipe(badly), went out on the lagoon at night to spot snakes and camen in spotlights and basically run around like big kids for day after day.
We went Pirahna fishing, they didn't tell us that they were pirahnas until the first one was hauled on board our very narrow and not very stable canoe. That nearly sank us then and there! Thing is, they were encouraging us to swim in the lagoon only the previous evening only a few hundred metres or so away!
The lodge itself was all bamboo and string but the food! Everymeal was a proper sit down three course affair, the chef was excellent and the food was all with ingredients right out of the jungle and surrounds. Tree tomatoes, catfish, cactus juice and deep fried green bananas. The night before Caroline's birthday they made her a cake and everything! They said they knew her birthday wasn't until the day after but we would be gone by then so they thought what the hell! When the cake came out everyone started singing wondering who's birthday it was including Caroline, the look on her face was a picture when she realised the cake was for her!
The guides Louis and Enrique were both good guys who really knew their onions even though sometimes you couldn't tell if Louis was being serious or not.
All in all la selva amazon experience lodge is a place we can recommend to absolutely anyone, awesome!
