Haro to Bilbao
A drive through the Basque countryside seemed different from the rest of Spain. Here the villages are scattered through small valleys. The hilly country is heavily wooded and the fields lush and overgrown. As usual we took back roads with the GPS taking us down some alarmingly small dirt tracks.
Entering Bilbao is a brilliant sight. As you come over the hills, the city is spread out below along the estuary filled with shipping stretching away in both directions giving the impression of a long narrow city. The spaghetti convolutions of the roads around the port were difficult to follow but we eventually reached the port for the ferry back to the UK.
There are only so many hours you can wait in a huge car-park waiting to board before boredom sets in. We wandered around chatting to anyone and everyone: people who were interested in our van, people with 4 wheel drives and camping set-ups and so on. Finally we boarded for the 24 hour journey and left Spain. Our cabin this time was an outside one, with big windows - much more pleasant than the pokey inside cabin on the way over.
