I decided to start the day by visiting the York Castle Museum which I thoroughly enjoyed. I ended up spending nearly three hours here because there was so much to see and such fascinating history to read about. The Victorian street, the famous Kirkgate, was a real highlight with its authentic shop fronts and interesting objects which offered a glimpse of a bygone age. There were literally thousands of wonderful and weird, beautiful and bizarre items in the collections belonging to many different categories spanning hundreds of years. The York Castle Prison was a very interactive experience with projections of 'inmates' in different cells telling their stories. The Old Mill House by the river was just gorgeous and I loved 'The Sixties' room. All in all it was well worth visiting this fantastic museum and I would definitely recommend others to visit here.
The famous 'Clifford's Tower' was my next stop and although I didn't go inside it looked simply stunning with the clear blue sky behind and I managed to get some fabulous photos. I kept wandering and was hoping to visit Fairfax House which is the finest Georgian town house in England but unfortunately it was closed. I had a wee peek through the doors and will make sure I put this at the top of my list for next time I'm in York.
I then came across part of the City Wall Walk so decided I'd see where this took me. This was well worth doing because you get such a different view of this picturesque beautiful City. I ended up near the Museum Gardens so wandered through here and then came across the City Art Gallery. Unfortunately this was closed and will be for the next three months apparently so that was a shame. This is another thing to put on my list for next time along with the Treasurers House which is closed until February. I then fell upon op-shop central which made for a very fun time indeed. One of the shops was closing down so everything was £1.00! SCORE! I spent £9.00 in total and got some fabulous items of clothing for Andrew and myself. Mum will be proud of my bargain hunting!
It was getting dark by now so I thought it was time to make my way back to the Hotel to drop off my purchases and meet up with Andrew. He arrived pretty soon after me so that was good and we freshened up before heading out for dinner. I had come across a wee Tapas Bar/Restaurant called 'Ambiente' in my travels that looked really lovely so we decided to try this out. It was definitely a good choice because the food was divine and had a great atmosphere. I had a wonderful day and this just topped it off! Perfect!
