We had breakfast at the Hotel again and talked through our plan for the day. Andrew and I packed up our things because we were heading back to London on a 5pm Bus from Bristol so we wouldn't be back. Anne and Richard were staying one more night here because they had to return the rental car on Monday morning. First stop today was Castle Combe which was probably my favourite little village we visited over the weekend. Simply stunning! It has been called 'The Prettiest Village in England' and was ranked number 2 in the The Times' best villages! Visitors have been coming to enjoy its charms for at least a century, renowned for its attractiveness and tranquillity, and for fine buildings including the medieval church. The village houses are all of typical Cotswold type, constructed in stone with thick walls and roofs made from split natural stone tiles. The properties are many hundreds of years old and are listed as ancient monuments. Strict rules apply to preserve the beauty and character of Castle Combe for later generations to admire. It is situated on the southern-most edge of the Cotswolds and is approximately 12 miles from the Georgian city of Bath which was where we headed next.
We spent about an hour walking and exploring the streets of Bath before finding a neat wee pub where we decided to have lunch. We have definitely been pretty successful with our choices of pubs to eat at over the weekend! We wanted to make sure we allowed plenty of time to get to Bristol Bus Station so we made a move shortly after lunch. Andrew and I were in Bath when the Christmas Markets were all set up and we both couldn't believe how different it looked without them and the atmosphere was a lot less festive. I would recommend Bath when the Christmas Markets are on! It took us about half an hour to get to Bristol so we ended up arriving at the station with plenty of time to spare. We weren't worried though and it was better than being rushed especially because Bristol is such a hard place to navigate your way around with heaps of confusing roundabouts and traffic signs. Even Andrew struggled at times! So we said goodbye to Anne and Richard until next weekend and hopped on the bus back to London. Great weekend!
