Sunday October 13:
I woke up quite early, 06:00, packed my things and checked out. Walked a few minutes to the harbour and after a few misguided attempts to fetch my actual tickets I got onboard the ferry. Apparently I had booked an air seat ticket, I wonderd what that might mean on a boat. Turns out they have some secluded area where planelike seats are placed in a planelike manner. So it does kinda make sense.
Took a while before we got out of the harbor but by then the sun was rising. Giving a very nice view of a sun slowly rising about the hilly outskirts of Athens. What a way to wake, nope we're definitely not in flatland anymore. We stopped at some islands along the way, some definitely worthwhile seeing, but alas we're always pressed on time aren't we.
After about 6,5 hours we entered the port of Santorini and I realised not getting ripped of for a ride to town was a nono. It looked like a giant welcoming home party but alas, they're not your friends but (mini)bus divers looking for prey. Looking at the cliff of maybe two to three hundred meters I high and only seeing a single road going up I gave up trying to avoid the hunting drivers. I settled for a polite sounding guy who seemed quite dissapointed I was alone.
To make up for company he continued calling his friends while driving this snake road upwards like an accident waiting to happen. The accident was nice to wait so I got to where I didn't want to be without a hitch. I guess the driver hadn't understood me, but well I can't get lost if I have no actual route now can I?
I walker around and enjoyed the view in Fira, found a nice cafeteria and grabbed a bite to eat. Figured out where the hell my hotel was and found out it was about 1,5 hour walk. It looked a car only road so I asked my hostess if I could walk there. She didn't speak English and directed my to the cook, a plumb looking lady a chef that tastes to much of her own greasy food, who declared it could not be done. Well it could, but it was to far a walk and she declared me crazy.
Well, I am crazy so I went on my way anyway. It was a car only road after all but the people where kind enough to not run me over. When I was about half way there was a guy on a motoped asking me where I was headed, I replied Karmary and he replied; "Kamari, I'll bring ya". Well, figured it couldn't be that bad right? So I hopped on and we talked a bit along the way. We first went to the local tourist office for directions, they didn't really know but the closer we got the lese vague the directions became. Do not that this was in a 5 minute drive, I guess he was right in saying "I'll bring you, its comlicated and I don't want you to get lost.".
After reaching my hotel we said goodbey and I gave him one of my Utrecht Domtower souvenirs. I got checked in and got to my lovely little room with balcony. I took a shower and went out to discover the town. I came across a place for booking tours and booked myself a boat tour with a sunset stop at Ia (supposedly the highligth of the island) at 9:45. He told me to be a little early, I guessed 9:30 but he said "no no no, 9:40 is good". I guess Greek have a different sense of being a bit early.
I got an icecream with some flavours I've never heard about (I guess they're local?) and sat down on the black beach listening to the ocean. Note to self, do that more often. I went onto the mainstreet, filled with empty bars and near empty restaurants. They were fuller on the way back so I guess evening life starts late here eventhough the sun sets at about 6. At the local tour guide office I booked myself a boat tour passing most of the major spots and a sunset at Ia. I returned to the to hotel to catch some much needed sleep, there are better days to discover nightlife than Sunday's ;).
I woke up during the night due to some extreme winds. The moto guy warned me about that, saying "winter is coming", I wonder if he watches Game of Thrones?
