Saturday October 12:
Flew from Amsterdam to Munich and after a long wait, at least that's how it felt, was finally able to board for my actual destination. Due to the nature of the transfer we had to go outside, into a bus and seemingly drive to the other end of the airport. While we were standing ready for take off our captain informed us that our scheduled runway was now closed and we would need to taxi to another one which would take more than a few minutes.
When landing in Athens it took quite a while before I was able to claim my baggage but it came across unharmed. During the landing we got a good view of Athens and it also showed that the airport lies considerably inland. I of course had a hostel in the harbor suburb Pireaus and I prepared myself for the bus trip to there. After asking the desk I found myself in the bus taking me to Pireaus. The bus being what you would expect for city bus, taking a little over 1,5 hour to drive me through amicable streets in Athens. Surprisingly, despite the crisis the streets were filled with cars, including many decent and recent makes.
After I arrived at my stop I got out. Busses are free here I guess? If not, well no harm done as my taxes shall be spend on keeping Greece alive in any case. It was time to find my accomodation, a cheap hostel in apparently ill lit back ally. Taversing through several of such omnious ally's I find the wrong one. Thanks for that googlemaps ;). The clerk helped me on my way and this time I found the right one. The clerk informed me that he had expected me and had prepared hot water for a shower, how nice :).
I dropped of my luggage in my room, took a quick shower and went out to get some food. Along the way I managed to witness a wedding party at the local church. A decent crowd was watching and some folks were roaring their idle running motorcycles to add some festive noise. I found a small restaurant along side the harbor road and indulged in some local food. A beef gyros with some, quite over salted, French fries and a local beer.
Full and tired I retreated back to my room, prepared for the trip to Santorini the next and went to bed.
