Left Vienna at 7.30am.
On the road to visit the Eagle's Nest.
Stopped for lunch at a beautiful little village called Berchtesgaden.
Had a lovely walk around there.
Very scenic and lots of different coloured buildings.
Bought a great airplane charm but hesitated over a picnic basket charm to remind me of the picnic Meagan and I had on Hyde Park....
Went back.
Shop was closed for lunch.
I almost broke the door down!
Then on a smaller bus for the trip up the mountain.
What a road!
The house and road were built in 13 months with 3000 workers as a present for Hitler's 50th birthday from the Nazi Party.
There are no bedrooms in this house. It was always planned as a place to visit for the day.
What a road.
Sheer, sheer drops!
Amazing tunnels ... Lots and lots of them.
Incredible to see video of these men building this road with horse drawn equipment. ... In snow and summer, night and day.
All workers were paid apparently... But if you wanted to leave, you were shot.
We arrived up the top and there is this entrance to a tunnel... You walk along the tunnel... Then into Hitler's private lift.
2 things here:
Hitler had his Mercedes driven along the tunnel to the lift.
And, once inside the lift, you couldn't help thinking how much better it might have been if the lift cable broke the first time Hitler got in the lift.
This place is now a restaurant so there were people everywhere.
A lot of the place was lost because of this.
In the Palaces we have seen, all rooms are set up as museum.
It would have been fantastic if that could have happened here.... But not to be.
You had to use your imagination ALOT.
However, the view was breathtaking .
One minute we were totally enclosed on clouds.
The next, you could see the jagged, towering mountains and the valleys far, far below.
And it was freezing!
There was snow in the bus car park.
Amazing... Huge bit of history here... But recalling the footage of Hitler up here, really you just wished that he had fallen over the edge.
Evoked weird emotions.
Back to the bus... Onto Innsbruik
Not staying at the hotel we thought we were.
They advised Calvin at 7.30am that they had double booked and no rooms so he spent the day chasing accommodation for us.
We ended up at The Grey Bear Hotel right in the centre of town.
Lovely hotel.
Funny though.... Half the streets are blocked off for a night time marathon .
Should have seen the bus doing a u turn... Up on a footpath.... Back on a footpath.
WAlked the streets with the 3 NZ girls before dinner at the hotel.
Stood at the roadside, cheering and clapping the runners. Great fun.
Dinner at the hotel... Lovely
Off on a scenic horse and carriage ride in the mountains tomorrow first thing.
I absolutely love Austria. I would come back here.
