1. Jan stays in bed a little longer and I go out and do some shopping and refuel the car.
2. The view from our hotel's window is even better in the daylight.
3. Street names in this town are great: Frank Sinatra Drive, Martin Luther King Highway, Mel Tormé Avenue...:)
4. It appears that the city looks quite cool even in the day.
5. We drive on to the Death Valley national park but because we leave quite late, we arrive shortly before dark so see very little. Just Zabriskie Point and the Badwater Basin salt flat (the lowest point in the US at nearly 100m below sea level).
6. We attempt to find accommodation at the park entrance but the only hotel there makes a point of scaring low-budget travellers away by offering us a promotional rate of US$300 for the room (instead of the usual US$500). It is very nice and the service is impeccable so we take advantage of their kindness, use their internet to book a cheap motel (in the nearest town 1h driving away!) and sip their US$8 capuccinos (!!!), which btw are excellent and retreat to our sleeping area.
7. We realize that in most American supermarkets liquor (next to sweets) is the last thing customers see prior to check out. Smart.
8. I come across a very badly translated (into Polish) credit card terminal interface. "Bierz karta" is one example of murdered Polish grammar and style.
