We arrived in Sardis to visit two ancient sites, the ruins of a Synagogue and then the ruins of the temple of The goddess Artemis.
We read this from the Revelation chapter 3:-
To the Church in Sardis
1 "To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.
2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God.
3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.
4 Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy.
5 He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels.
6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
This would be a wake up call for this church! But also it is for us too!
Siting around the back of the Temple of Artemis in the shade of the columns we listened to our devotional leaders Bruce & Jenny Robertson, who led us to consider the apathy of this church and the dilemma it faced. Bruce spoke about this ancient town being twice invaded by enemies while they slept as they did not think their walls could be breached. This attitude was their downfall, not only physically but spiritually as well.
The ancient synagogue was spectacular, if you look at the photos attached you will see how much of this place of worship remains in tact and in good condition.
We were again inspired and humbled as we thought about how these places were built, no concrete trucks, scaffolding, machinery of any kind just manual labor. And these ruins still exist after thousands of years.
We also passed through the ancient town of Thyatra but did not stop as there are only a small set of ruins there.
Now we are of to lunch in the old city of Philidelphia, lots of travel today!
