DAY 4: IN THE SWAMPS AND ON THE MISSISSIPPI
We started our last full day in New Orleans with a swamp tour. We saw a couple of baby gators but unfortunately their mums and dads tend to go hiding during the colder seasons. Sitting in a low to the water, flat-bottomed boat though, I don't know how comfortable you'd be if you were to come face-to face with some of the 20ft residents we were told about - regardless if the swamp boat captain knows them on a first name basis!
We still saw enough of the local wildlife (incl birds, snakes, raccoons, turtles and wild boars) to keep us entertained. It was also interesting to see how some people lived on the swamp, with not all homes surviving the aftermath of Katrina. If you ever come to New Orleans, look up 'Cajun Encounters' - well run and value for money.
We then spent the arvo with a final walk around the French Quarter. With all the buskers and street entertainment there's always something going on and never a dull moment to be had.
In the evening we took a ride on the Steamboat Natchez, where we enjoyed a buffet and the sounds of live dixie jazz music as we travelled up and down the Mississippi. It was the perfect way to cap off our stay here in 'the Big Easy' as we prepare for the theme park mecca of Orlando that awaits us tomorrow.
For now though, we're enjoying one last night with a couple of quiet drinks on our balcony, soaking in the atmosphere of Bourbon St below.
New Orleans - it's gotta be on your list!
