Craig & Jills Round the World Trip
Thursday morning we left the hotel at 7am, which was a shock to the system, we can't do early mornings anymore. We went to Damnernsaduak floating market about an hour out of Bangkok. Little canals jam packed with old thai ladies in boats trying to sell you everything from exotic fruit to postcards. The small boats jostle for space, but everyone is smiling and friendly. Of course we made a few more purchases, 1 a big sitting buddha, although we are now pondering how we are going to get it home!
We stopped off at Nakhon Pathom, where there is a huge copper covered pagoda, lots of buddhas covered in gold leaf. On the way back we got to experience the famous bangkok traffic jams. Bumper to bumper cars, tuk tuks, trucks full of people sat in the back and everyone constantly swapping lanes.
On Friday we battled through the heat and worked our round Bangkoks most famous sights, no not the ladyboys! We went to Wat Arun, Temple of the Dawn, and were surprised at the detailed decoration of the temple, which is covered in painted tiles. Next across the river to Wat Po temple, home of the enormous reclining buddha, 46m long. We hired a guide to take us round the site, he kept laying on the floor to take our photo, so not to cause offense and point his feet at us. He taught us how to pray at the buddha. Once again lots of sparkling temples, we never imagined there would be so many or how dazzling they would be.
The Grand palace and Emerald buddha was next. The temple of the emerald buddha was covered in gold and jewels, and inside is a tiny buddha on top of a pyramid of gold. We wandered round the rest of the complex through numerous other temples and palaces, trying to shelter in any shade we could find. Having to have ankles and shoulders covered made it even more sweaty.
In the evening we went to patpong famous red light district, however not many lady boys or as bad as we thought it would be. Mainly full of market stalls selling fake clothes and bags. Table tennis seemed popular??
