Craig & Jills Round the World Trip
Another early start we were up at 6.30, and you will be pleased to know lots of rain and clouds. However, this didnt deter us and we got the 7.30 bus back up to Machu Picchu. We were surprised to see how many people were already there considering the time and the weather. However it was still a lot quiter than yesterday. The site looked even more mysterious as the clouds swirrled round the mountains.
Today we had decided to climb Wayna Picchu which is the big mountain in the background of the typical view of Machu Picchu. As we headed towards it through the ruins the clouds billowed up from the valley below and eventually covered us and the mountain we were about to climb. We werent sure whether to continue or not as we didnt want to climb up all that way and not be able to see anything.
The rain had stopped by now so we thought we may aswell and keep our fingers crossed it would disappear as quick as it had arrived. We signed a book at the entrance to the climb, they make you do this so they know if anyone is missing. We were the 14th people that day to sign in.
As soon as we headed off jill started to regret it as we left the safety of the ruins and headed along the trail through the jungle. Luckily we didnt see any huge creepy crawleys or snakes.
It was pretty much vertical walking / climbing up the side of the mountain with a set of stairs / rocks to guide us. An occasional wire rope was there to hold onto but other than that you were on your own. The steps were as high as Jill waist in places so she particularly enjoyed it.
It felt like one of the hardest things we have ever done. It tooks us about an hour to reach the first inca ruins on the top of the mountain. As we reached the summit the fog began to clear and the view made it all worth while.
We couldnt believe there were people up here working on renovating some of the buildings.Thats one hell of a journey to work every day.
To get to the summit you have to go on your hands a knees through a cave. It was squeeze and even more fun trying to come back through backwards. We spent an hour at the top, catching our breath and enjoying the once in a lifetime view. You could see mountains covered in jungle all around, the river winding through the valley below and ofcourse Machu Picchu. It was also funny watching the buses winding there way up the road to the entrance dodging each other as ones came back down.
The climb back down was easier but more scary as you were facing the way you were going to fall. Jill felt good watching all the young blokes puffing and panting there way up, trying to pretend they werent tired and sweating like pigs. Everyone kept asking was it much further, so we kept grinning and giving motivation to carry on.
As we signed out at he bottom, another100 had signed in, atleast we had enjoyed it while it was quite
We then headed to an Inca bridge which we didnt think was far away. This turned out to be another hours hard labour! By this time everyone was looking at us gone out as we were shattered from out earlier efforts but everyone must have thought we were just struggling to walk round the ruins.
The train ride back to Cusco left at 3.30, when we thought we would be able to sit back and relax. The conductors on the train had other ideas. They dressed up in local gear to put on a fashion show which turned into more of a comedy show for us. We havent laughed so much for a longtime, with some very sensible jumpers on show!!
Forgot to say, we both projectile vomited within 30 seconds of each other, having arrived back at the hotel after the journey back. Am I glad we were back at the hotel, otherwise the train toilet would not have been a pretty sight!
