Craig & Jills Round the World Trip
Yes that is our own photo.
Thankfully as you can see we finally made it here on thursday. The 4 hour train ride took us deep into the mountain and jungle. We then a took a 30 min bus ride zig zagging up the mountain to Machu Picchu. Wow, it really is that impressive, we couldnt believe we were actually there.
Yes ben we did go, and no there isnt a visitor centre where you can take a photo of a model!!!
You cant appreciate the scale and location until you see it for real, it deffinitely lives up to expectations. The sight seemed to glow in the sunshine, nearly as much as jills burnt shoulders and craigs bald head.
We had a 2 group tour with a guide who took us round the main points of interest and explined the lay out of the city and how clever the incas where. After refuelling we an all you can eat buffet lunch, we headed back into the ruins to explore by ourselves.
In the morning the site seemed to be full of foreign tourists and in the afternoon they are replaced with school kids, although this detract from its beauty.
We headed up to the Guardians Hut, which is where all the typical postcard photos are taken from, like ours. It was amazing to sit up there and look down on this impressive city. We spent a couple of hours wandering round a taking lots of photos.
We got the bus back down to the local town of Aguas Calientes and checked into our hotel. The hotel overlooks a river / rapids and the noise of the water reminded us of our past trip to Niagra falls. We went for a walk round this quirky little town, full of tourist shops, restaurants and internet cafes in the middle of the jungle. We didnt have any problems with alttitude sickness, no cocoa required as Machu Picchu is only 6000ft opposed to Cusco which is 11500ft.
