Craig & Jills Round the World Trip
We spent Sunday day on the beach before saying a tearful farewell to all the kids on the beach. I think they were happy to see us go as it meant they got our surf boards!
Sunday night we went to the maracana to see Botofogo v Vasco, 2 local teams. It was the first game at the maracana in a year, as they have been renovating it, although the bottom tier isnt finished yet, so we were really pleased we got to go. It was red hot but luckily managed to get seats in the shade. We were really pleased to see how many fans there was, we were hoping for 15,000, but were surprised to see the top tier almost full with 45,000 loud brazilian football fanatics. We had chosen to support Botofogo as our friend at the hotel supported them and also Jefferson trains with them. The game was amzing we were so lucky, absolutley spot on. Quality football, lots of skill and fancy foot work. It had it all, 2 sending offs, 1 for each team, 2 penalties, 1 for each team. The final score was 5-3 to Botofogo. It was funny as each team kept going in front, until Botofogo finally came from 3-3 to steal the show. The atmosphere was electric, never heard such noise, both sets of supporters all through the game were singing and clapping. The brazilians really do love there football. For all you statos Romario the old 39 brazilian striker plays for Vasco and got a hatrick, hes now only needs 43 goals to match Peles goals. It really rounded off an amzing 5 weeks in rio, Im sure you have guessed we loved it here, we hope one day to come back.
Monday we flew to Chile, Santiago. We spent today trying to decide our sight seeing schedule for chile and fly further south to puerto montt tomorrow.
