As the sun was still shining, we hired a moped for the day at 500 pesos, that was the cheapest we could find! We packed up a dry bag (that I purchased the day before), grabbed a mango lassi (I'm obsessed with Filipino mangos) and headed off! Matt is a great driver, but as we had previously had a little tumble off the moped in Bohol, I was a little nervous on the back. Although we were only going about 5 miles an hour at the time, and we were both absolutely fine, the tumble wasn't nice and it was enough to shake me up a little!
I was overjoyed to arrive at Nacpan beach sound and safe 50 minutes later! The sun was still shining and there weren't too many tourists on the beach at that point! The beach was stunning! We set up shop for the day and sat chilling reading our books. I went for a little explore to both ends of the beach. The left side joined onto another famous beach called 'Twin Beach' but unfortunately due to some legal proceedings, it wasn't open to the public which I only found out after an angry security guard carrying a large rifle blew his whistle furiously at me! At first I thought it was the coastguard blowing it at people in the sea so I just ignored it, but as it was getting continuously louder and more aggressive, I looked around to find him pointing straight at me... Chill out love!
We spent some time chilling on the beach before grabbing the worlds smallest meal of sweet and sour chicken in a beach front restaurant. We had noticed that when it comes to chicken dishes, the Filipino's use the entire chicken, not just the meat like we do at home. They literally take a large knife and cut the whole chicken (bones and all) into pieces which they then chuck into whatever meal. The end result is, you struggle to get a mouthful without chewing on a bone!
When the clouds set in fairly thick, we thought we'd call it a day before the crowds of people that had now built up on the beach had the same idea! We were thinking about driving onto Duli beach, another 40 minutes North but once it started to drizzle, we decided against it and headed back! The weather in the Philippines had been so unpredictable, it could be glorious sunshine without a cloud in sight, to absolutely lashing it down within 30 minutes! It made it quite hard to plan your day. We drove onto Corong Corong beach for a drink as the weather had managed to settle on our return!
We had changed to Bamboo Billabong Backpackers run by an Australian couple. It looked as though they had over booked as they put us in a different dorm to the one we were shown. The double bunk bed was not so much a double and was literally 2 foot away from the ceiling (if that) and without a single fan pointing onto it. The bathroom was just amazing... how they could charge anyone to use it I don't know, they should have been paying us! How I didn't catch some sort of disease following my brief encounter in the shower I don't know! They had warned us the facilities were basic but this was another level!
The night on the top bunk had been genuinely the WORST nights sleep I think either of us had ever had! It was so hot and humid, and to make it worse, we couldn't help but touch each other so the addition of body heat was unbearable! Matt made out that every time he woke I had been snoring my head off but I know he says it to wind me up because I genuinely didn't sleep a wink!
Both grumpy and very tired, we decided to have a chill day within El Nido. We found a French restaurant that had amazing wifi and sat using that for most the day while it rained. That afternoon, it started to brighten up so we caught a tricycle to Las Cabanas beach. It had a really cool vibe, wth lots of fancy bars and restaurants. There was also the island to island Zipline there but it had closed for the evening. We stayed for the gorgeous sunset at the end of the beach and then headed back to the hostel. We had dinner at the Artcafe both nights as it was so good, but a tad expensive so we would have to rein it in a little!
We had begged the owner Rick, if he could move us to a better bed for the rest of our stay which although they were full, he had managed to sort which was awesome! Needless to say, we had a much better nights sleep!
