Aged Travellers
Started a little later this morning, 8am. However, before relating today's exploits an explanation of last night's excitement. Peru is a centre for earthquakes and has several of them each year. Most if them are not very severe. Last night's excitement was a trial run for all the emergency services to test procedures in case a real quake should occur. However, back to today and we headed into the high Andes and possible promblems with altitude sickness. The maximum height we reached was 4800 metres. I felt OK but I didn't do anything energetic to find out! The views were obviously spectacular and I lost count of all the volcanoes that were pointed out. We saw a few llamas, very tame and conveniently placed for tour buses to park so we tourists could take photos, After driving to the top we had the usual hair raising drive back down again to the small town of Chico. It's so small that even the roads weren't paved. Still there is no need for speed humps. However it had a lot to commend it. This looked more like the real Peru with the ladies wearing traditional dress because it was normal rather than for the befit of tourists. We had lunch in an unpreposing restaurant. It was a buffet and most of the dishes were OK but others were overlooked. We then reboarded the coach for a 5 minute drive to our hotel. Checked in and had 2 hours rest before leaving on a tour of Chivo. Again this was quite impressive . All the rooms were outside. After a short rest we went back into town for market. Again this really was for the locals. No European, with their high standards of hygiene, would have bought anything even if they new what they were buying! In the evening meal, 3 courses, but no choice. For the main course we had Alpaca, a bit dry but very lean. Might taste better if cooked differently.
