Aged Travellers
Another day another flight this one from Lima to Arequipa. We had to leave the hotel at 7 which meant being at breakfast by 6 and setting the alarm for 5:15. This time though the flight was a short one, one hour, back over the Andes to Arequipa. The views from the plane were spectacular. The hotel is situated on the main square which has a some rather attractive gardens in the centre. The hotel is an an old building but the interior is ultra modern.my room even has tea making equipment!!! We had only brief rest before we embarked on our afternoon tour. First we drove higher into the mountains to try and get a good view of the three volcanoes that overlook the town. Unfortunately there was a heat haze which rather spoiled the photos. Did I mention the weather has really been behaving itself so far, with temperatures in the mid 20's. Long may it continue. Back to the town and a tour round a nunnery. This was actually a good deal less boring than it sounds. The nunnery was like it's own little town with its own streets within the walls. It was interesting to hear how the living conditions of the Nuns changed as attitudes changed over the centuries. This area of Peru, and indeed Peru is supposed to be at the forefront of modern cuisine, at least according to our guide who may possibly be biased!! Consequently a group of us are are going to put it to the test this evening by trying some of the local delicacies. We went to a restaurant in a street adjacent to the main square. It was still warm enough for us to go and eat on the roof terrace. I had fried coy, guinea pig!!! The meat tasted fine but there was not much of it and what there was was difficult to get to. A meal to try for the experience but never twice!! While we were eating our tranquil evening was interrupted by the wailing of sirens of every variety. This was shorty following by two helicopters circling noisily overhead. This all lasted for about an hour. I will probably find out what the cause of the commotion tomorrow. Anyway it didn't spoil a pleasant evening.
