Yet another island to tick of the list!
This weekend I made the trip to the small Malaysian island of Labuan (to a town called Victoria) for Nick's birthday.
The trip started nice and early with Garry and Mark. We go the car ferry at 9.30am from Brunei and it took around an hour and half to get to the island. Where we met Nick, Julie, Hilary and Tony at the Waterfront Hotel.
This hotel was gorgeous! It has recently been renovated so all the rooms were really modern and huge!! We were meant to go out exploring the island on Mopeds, but a big storm cloud came over and we decided not to risk getting soaked and lost in the storm. So we checked in and spent the rest of the day relaxing in our rooms and round the pool (with the grey clouds!)
For Nick's birthday celebrations we went to his favourite fish restaurant in Labuan (they have been here a couple of times). As usual I didn't eat much but it was a fun meal. After this we went on a bit of "pub" crawl. First visiting an Irish bar which was very quiet but we played a couple of games of pool. After this we went to a more local bar where there were some young guys on holiday and clearly making the most of their freedom!!!!!! Let's just say the dancing wasn't very "strictly"
After this bar we found a night club called Poppins, this was a great place, there was a live band who were doing cover songs from all era's and were very good and we didn't have to go to the bar and struggle for a drink as there were waiters and waitresses who came to us!
On Sunday afternoon we wandered around Victoria for a while, visiting many many duty free shops (Labuan is a bit of a tax haven so there are hundreds of duty free shops!). Eventually it was time to catch the ferry back to Brunei. This time the ferry was not quite as nice as the car ferry. It was a little bit like sitting in an aeroplane cabin on the water and I wasn't particularly comfortable. I felt a little like if it tipped over we would all be stuck, so my next visit to Labuan will hopefully be there and back on the car ferry even if it does take around half an hour longer!
