Cuba - More than old cars
Today is just a long bus trip (0830-1730) from Warsaw to Vilnius Lithuania where we will reside for 2 nights.
The trip was pleasant starting out on a highway with 2 lanes each way reducing to 1 lane each way. There was hardly any traffic on the road but many of those who were caused our driver some grief as they were not that good at signalling their intentions. He had obviously seen it all before as he handled it well. The drive took us over very flat land which was either dense forest or flat farmland intermittently broken with a spattering of lakes and canals.
While still in Poland we did have a lunch stop at Augustow. A small quaint village where we had a one hour break to wander around, get some fruit and have an ice cream. The most common store/kiosk here were those selling ice cream. Nice it was too.
There were no formalities at the border crossing with Lithuania. As both countries are in the EU passport control is not necessary. Had there been a formality we probably would have had to wake them up as there we had not seen any vehicles on the highway for a while. The only things operating were the money exchange and WCs.
After finding a petrol station to purchase our road tax coupon we resumed our journey arriving to a lovely evening in Vilnius. A quick bite to eat in the hotel (included in the tour) and then off for a wander around part of the old town which is adjacent to the hotel. The city is known for its beauty and based on what we quickly saw this evening (a couple of photos are included) we are in for a treat.
Our hotel has a list of VIP guests that have stayed here including Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, President of Ireland, Jose Carreras, Bob Dylan, Pet Shop Boys, some more presidents and musicians and then of course us (although we aren't on the list yet!).
PS: the bell tower in the photo is not on a lean, just needed the full width of the wide angle lens to get it all in.
