Cuba - More than old cars
Today we entered the Main River (pronounced Mine River by the Germans). It is over 500km long and one of the more significant tributaries of the Rhine River. The Main has 34 large locks with the lowest one having a change of 2.3m and the largest of 7.6m. There is virtually no room on either side of the boat as we go in and we continue to find it amazing that the whole process can be done without touching the sides of the lock. Having said that when the water comes into the lock it does push the boat around and on occassion into the side of the lock.
Around noon we arrived in Miltenberg Village. We have a short coach ride from the boat to get to the old Medieval part of the village. Those not coming on the walking tour stay on the boat as it leaves for Freudenberg where those on the walking tour will eventually meet up with the boat.
A lot of work has been done along the river of this historic village to reduce the amount of flooding it has been getting since the 13th century. There was even an edict made by the governing body one year that all houses had to be raised and an additional stone walled building built underneath it. It is quite visible in all the buildings. Miltenberg has a very unique red stone that used to be mined for building. The uniqueness is that throughout the red stone is gold coloured stone (resisted calling it Goldstone!).
Later in evening after dinner we had entertainment by Mark Delano, a singer who entertained us mainly with crooning songs (Sinatra, Dean Martin, Presley) but once he realised us 'old folks' wanted other stuff he succumbed and did a really good job. It was the only way he could get us up to dance.
