Cuba - More than old cars
After the visits to the Japanese internment centre and Japanese gardens we headed off to Salmon Arm on the shores of the Shuswap Lake. The trip took us to Nakusp where we had to make a decision to go up the Revelstoke or Vernon side of theArrow lake. Either way we had to take a ferry. As we will be returning to Penticton via Vernon we took the Revelstoke route but first stopped for lunch in Nakusp.
There we came across a large group of Bikers with teddy bears strapped to their bikes. They were on a trip to raise funds for Child Cancer. They had booked out most of the restaurant and we ended up eating with a couple, Walter and Karen from Winfield, BC, who were doing their own bike tour. They were in their late 50's and had only been biking for about 7 years. Mostly they stayed in motels but this was their first year camping and they were looking forward to it. They had also travelled overseas and were looking to come to NZ and bike around. Walter had a brother who lived in Hamilton so needed no advice from us. It was a really enjoyable lunch - always nice to meet up with locals.
They were heading south and we soon found out where the bikers were going as they were on the same ferry as us. The ferry went on the half hour and took about 20 minutes. Good weather, smooth trip, great scenery. We then had about 20 kms of highway which was under repair. While it made for a longer trip it was still interesting. Always on the lookout for deer or bears but none today.
Hotel was easy to find. It is located down by the Shuswap Lake and we have a lakeside room with a lovely view. The rain has stopped today and the weather for the next week is hot (high 20s low 30s)and dry.
The next morning (Sunday) we found a French cafe attached to the hotel where we had our breakfast. Great coffee - yeah! We then went out on the town to find that pretty much everything is closed on Sundays and Mondays. We will find something to do but the R&R is also just fine.
