Douglas Brown's Travels
Today's ride was some 205km along the stunning Croatian and bosnian coast. We travelled via Drvenik and Sucuraj with a transit in and out of Bosnia Herzegovina.. As we climbed out of Dubrovnik we stopped on the hill for one of the best views do the city sprawled out below.the full defensive wall and its relationship to the city was evident. After a rest day it took a few corners to get back in the swing of mountain road riding and I was very cautious and did not attach any of the corners until my tyres were well and truly up to temperature. We were nearly back to our full group of riders with only Frank and Mary-Sue too unwell to ride. Mali Ston a fishing village in the Neretva River Delta, was our coffee stop for the morning. This area is an important for salt production and the town is protected by 5.5km inland wall, constructed in 1333. This wall signifying he'd the importance of salt as a commodity and the need to protect the town from raiders. This wall is very reminiscent of China's Great Wall. However, on a much smaller scale. The wall viewed from the other side of the river on our departure. We then had a 14km traversal of Bosnia Hertzogivina. Neither the entry or exit boarder officers needed to see our passports and simply waved us on. The road quality began to determinate with many bumps and cracks in the road. Quite often on the apex of corners. I was glad to be on the GS as its brilliant suspension soaked up the bumps and the bike held its line perfectly. 120 km into ou days journey we reached the village of Drvenik and the ferry terminal for our terip to the island of Hava. Four wheeled vehicles were loaded first while the bikes waited patiently, wondering if there would be room for us. Bikes were then squeezed into the spaces adjacent to the entry ramp which were too tight a turn for cars. I climbed up to the passenger deck and fond a rail side seat where I sat and dozed for the half hour crossing. The temperature was perfect and the air clean and fresh. When we had exited the ferry and regrouped we set off for our short ride to a local seafood resturant in Sucural's small fishing harbour. The first section after lunch was again very eleven and narrow road until we cam across a road repair crew laying new tarmack. With our tyres nicely coated with wet tar we proceeded cautiously for the next few corners. The traffic was very light and we could enjoy the ride and take in the countryside. Olive groves had started to appear on the side of the road so I was sure I could find an olive dish at the nights stop. We arrived at our hotel at approximate 4:30 and had two ours of relaxing before we caught the water taxi to our evening meal. After relaxing and catching up on emails it was time to shower and dress for the evening meal. The ferry ride across the bay to our resturant was spectacular and gave us a splendid view of the town and all the little private beaches. The sun set as we crossed the bay and gave us some wonderfully colourful photo opportunities. Our dinner was at a magic little resturant which had been hand built by the owner from local stone and bric-a-brac. Following on with this hand made theme all the food served in the resturant is hand made on the premises from self grown produce. On arrival we were greeted with a choice of complimentary Fig or Rose Grapa. At 14% alcohol it was certainly a warming drink that bit into your taste buds. Our host informed us that we were standing in front of the very wild rose bush used to produce the Grapa we were drinking. We were then seated at a large bench table and the food began to arrive. Squid salad cheese and tomatoes olives fresh baked bread. I might mention that we were seated under a fully Leyden olive tree which Jasa our guide estimated to be 150 years old. We were also supplied with home made red and white wine which went down very well while our main course of squid and Tooth fish was being prepared on the grill More food that we could possibly eat was delivered to the table. We finished our meal with a Turkish coffee and Tiramisu. The hotel bus then collected us and we returned to our rooms to end a perfect day.
