Douglas Brown's Travels
An 8am start from our Hotel in Lujbijana. One of our group Nick volunteered as tail end Charlie For the day (they use the same system of corner marking as do Ulysses) and we were off. It was not long before we had cleared the city and were motoring east along the motorway. The destination for the day was Plitvice National Park in Croatia. We were offered three routes for the day as you do not have to stay with the group for the entire tour. Our tour guide was taking the middle route and all bar one decided to stay with the group. Our route took us through Ivancna Gorica, Soteska, Crnomelj, Metlika and Karlovac. A total of 225km riding. There are very few speed signs on the road and you drive to the speed appropriate to the area you are in. What I mean by that is as you approach a village the name of the village will be displayed in black on a yellow sign and on departing the village a similar sign will be displayed with a red diagonal line through it. The speed applicable between these signs is 50km/h. On the roads connecting the villages the speed limit is 90km/hr. major roads which display directional signs on a blue background the speed is 100km/hr. motorways which display directional signs on a green background the speed is 130km/hr. Riding on the right hand side of the road did not prove to be as problematic as I anticipated and only once in a car park did I turn into the wrong lane. Our tour guide recommended that we run a food and coffee kitty for the trip and that he would do all the ordering an paying for us. This way he could use his local knowledge to order us the regional specialties at each lunch and coffee stop. It would also speed up our time at each spot as our guide would be placing one bulk order and there was only one bill to pay. We all agreed and put in 50 Euro each to start the kitty. This proved its worth at the first lunch as we were served two huge mixed platters of local specialties which the 13 of us could not devour and this was at a fraction of the cost of ordering individual meals. On arriving at the National Park we checked into our rooms and got changed into our walking shoes. The tour guide Dusan then took the group on a 3 hour walk through the national park. The park has 16 lakes interconnected by a series of waterfalls and the 300 squ/Kim's of park ranges from a max altitude of 1280 meters to 380 meters. Unfortunately my knee was giving me some discomfort so I decided to stay and rest in my room.
