This was taken at Jane Austen's front door, at Chawton. It has been our only wet day so far, despite the dire predictions of forecasters, so we consider ourselves very fortunate. Not that we want to cause a drought or anything, but a bit of dry weather will be gratefully received. After visiting the Austen residence, which was very well put together, we went on to Winchester, which, despite the pouring rain, was really impressive. The Great Hall is all that is left of the castle after Cromwell destroyed it when he finally took it in the Civil War, and most impressive with its round table and statue of Queen Vic. We have also been to London again, this time to visit Kensington Palace and to revisit the Victoria and Albert Museum, which is just so absorbing, you can only explore limited chunks at a time. Yesterday we went to Bletchley Park, home of the WWII code breakers with James and Jane, and came away with a sense of information overload of the most serious nature. It was wonderful to have an insight into the achievements and dedication of the people who worked there or worked with the code breakers, but so much to take in. Some people seemed to have visited expressly to exercise the opportunity to dress up in period costume, so there were ladies in 1940s suits, hats, shoes and dos and thoroughly enjoying themselves, with husbands trotting after them carrying cane shopping baskets and wearing 3 piece suits. It was a glorious day - lots of sun and time passed quickly so that it was 2 pm before we even realised it. Our hosts headed home by train and we continued on to St Albans, another amazing town with a fabulous cathedral, in which there was a service being held, so as we skirted around them, through the choir and chapels, we were singing along! Beautiful and interesting besides. We walked out towards the Roman ruins, but only saw the wall, as it was too late in the day to go into the various museums. Today we move on from our very cosy surroundings to our next chapter to be explored, Romford, Essex.
