It's been a while.....we were in accommodation that didn't have internet and I got out of the habit of blogging (again!). We are going to Edinburgh today, this last full day in Scotland. It is certainly a country of many extremes - fog, rain, mountains, flats. A mill we visited yesterday is routinely flooded 2 or 3 times a year - has been every year of it's existence since it was established, oh, about 800 years ago. They are confident it has been there since 1590, and suspect much longer,at least 12th century. Australia seems so much a pimple on a pumpkin in terms of history.
So, Aberlady. The church is The Church if Scotland, Aberlady, at which so many Dunn ancestors and relatives were baptised, married, chastised and buried, and we spent a while yesterday prowling around the graveyard in the sun and then in the church. The tower of the church and a couple if the aisles are quite old, but the main body is only from the 1870s when it was last rebuilt. Later we went to Haddington, which also features heavily in the family history, to the local government family history centre, where I dipped into the microfilm of the old parish records for Aberlady. Well, spent an hour or so at it, and then the spidery script got to me, and the car parking was due to expire, so I gave it up.
It has been so hot here - consistently over -wait for it - 25 degrees. We have our hats on all the time, despite the odd looks. The UK is only just getting on board with the whole risk of skin cancer thing. No one wears hats here.....
