Bronwyn
Well we have now finished our volunteer stint on the Galapagos Islands with Jatun Sacha at the San Cristobal Station (see the picture of our home). It was quite a different experience from that of the Jungle. As it was quite a new station (April '03) many of the projects are still getting started. The aim of the station is to encourage the locals on the Island back to agricultural practises and to introduce them to sustainable farming practises. Another aim was to reintroduce native vegetation on the Island.
So what did we get up to in the 2 weeks we were there??
- I slaved in the 35 degree heat building an irrigation system, whilst Bronnie worked in s***-literally!! One of the projects was to build a begashi pit, which is a mixture chicken manure, fermented milk, and organic matter - it is supposed to be a great fertiliser.
- We spent a day building a new carrot patch for the station as we as planting new tree seedings.
- We slogged away planting over 150 banana trees for the local farmer. Our labour was in exchange for the use of his chainsaw. Yep nothing is free in Ecuador.
- We also spent a couple of days building a new kitchen floor on the bottom floor of the station.
So all in all our work was rewarding as we could actually look back on our days work and see what we accomplished. But it was HOT and there were man eating flies yet this was all part of the experience.
Yet in contrast we were on the Galapagos Is and had an awesome view of the Pacific Coast, were only a 45min walk to the stone beach and had extraordinary weekend trips around the Island.
