Pleasantly surprised by Riobamba. We expected this to be a dodgy tourist in-between town but we are proven wrong and it is quite large and very quaint with lots of old colonial charm. However our time here is short. We arrived in the afternoon of the 17th and at 6.30am on the 18th we hit the train station with every other tourist in town to board the train that will take us down the 'Devil's Nose'.
Seven hours sitting on the top of a train with a very thin pillow may not sound like too much fun until your mind forgets all about the cold (in the morning), heat (in the afternoon) and stiff butt because the scenery is just breathtaking. We slowly made our way winding down through the mountains passing through countless farms, pastures and small towns. It all looked fairly Eastern Eurpean (well at least what we imagine Eastern Europe to look like).
And just in case we hadn't had enough of sitting on our butt within 15 minutes of getting off the train we had our backpacks put on the top of a bus that we were boarding for a 4 hour journey to the town of Cuenca (see picture).
