The Uganda blog wouldn't be complete without a photo of Herbert, the excellent driver that Kirsten organised from Moses Tours and Taxis in Mbarara - and the (almost) unburstable Toyota Land Cruiser. Almost unburstable because the belt running the aircon compressor broke when Kirsten was coming up to Entebbe to collect me - but apart from that the Land Cruiser didn't miss a beat.
Herbert always made good progress, but never drove too fast or had us clutching the seats in terror - and handled the ruts and gullies on the unsealed roads in a way which minimised discomfort for us, which is a real skill. In addition he was brilliant at spotting and identifying birds and animals when we were in the National Park and Game Reserves and pretty good on his history and politics too!
This photo was taken outside a cafe in Kagadi where, after our trip up to northern Uganda, he was reunited with matoke (plantain banana) his favourite staple food from his home region in southern Uganda.
