The big annual sea fishing competition is on this weekend in Malindi and Tim and I went to the traditional "boat auction" that precedes the competition at the Malindi Sea Angling Club last night. Each of the competing boats is "auctioned off" and the money received is pooled and split between the ultimate winners in various categories - so basically it's a betting system on the outcome of the competition.
Tim thought I should experience the Malindi Sea Angling Club and it is an experience. Like all angling clubs (I imagine) its very male and very red-neck, with the added twist here that its very white - only one coloured skipper and no black people at all - other than the bar staff.
We did, however, meet one interesting character - Bruno, a diminutive Swiss chap who has been here for more than 30 years. Like most Europeans here he has tried his hand at various things, including fishing and hunting. He now owns a number of hotels, but he has retained a passion for hunting and regaled us with a few great stories from his fund of triumphs and disasters in the bush - plus his theories on what really happened in Westgate. Everyone here knows someone who has heard of some new twist on the Westgate saga. The only common thread seems to be the incompetence of the Kenyan police and security services and the fear of what another such strike would do to the Kenyan tourist industry.
